His canvases are created in the sea, their colours and forms shaped and refined by the ebb and flow of the tide and the raw energy of the wind and rain. This footage of work in progress was captured on Folkestone beach by art dealer Robin Saikia, assisted by Vicki Carpenter, who is seen helping Jeff prepare paint and canvas for the unique ritual of 'sea painting' in the incoming tide. Jeff Hoare explains:
"The canvas is first immersed deep in the water. Colour is poured onto the surface. The waves deposit overlapping layers of paint. A series of profiles emerges, re-enacting the infinite depth of the sea. The process of creating and destroying synthesizes naturally with the momentum of the rising and breaking waves. And of course the sea reaches inland into the landscape: I have always been haunted by Eliot's words in The Four Quartets - 'The sea has many voices, Many Gods and many voices... The salt is on the briar rose, The fog is in the fir tree."
Jeff Hoare was born in 1923 and studied at the Chelsea School of Art and at the Royal College. From 1963 until 1995 he taught painting and drawing at St Martin's and Camberwell. He has directed art workshops all over the world, in Belgrade, Paris, Canada and Cameroun, and in 1985 he founded the Aegean School of Art in Kos. He has exhibited widely in Britain, the USA and Europe, with solo shows in London, Paris, New York and San Francisco.
